Defib Machines: Is Your Defib About To Expire?
It’s been 4 years since the unexpected collapse of 29-year-old Inter Milan player Christian Eriksen.
In the 43rd minute of the football match, the Parken Stadium fell silent as Eriksen collapsed to the ground after receiving a throw-in from Danish left-back Joakim Mæhle. It didn’t take long until the players and referee realised something was seriously wrong with Christian, as he lay on the pitch motionless.
The Aftermath
As Christian remained unresponsive, it soon became apparent that the football player was suffering from a cardiac arrest. Through the delivery of CPR and one shock with the defibrillator, the medical team managed to regain Eriksen’s heartbeat.
In the aftermath of this event, organisations such as The Premier League, and The British Heart Foundation launched a campaign to donate free AED machines to help organisations across the UK equip themselves with the necessary equipment to manage and maintain unexpected cardiac arrests.
Studies show that using an AED machine within 3-5 minutes of collapsing can increase a person’s chance of survival to between 50%-74%, making quick access to AED machines vital to the survival of cardiac arrest victims.
Is Your Defib About To Expire?
Many defibrillators were awarded after Christian’s collapse, which begs the question: Is your defib about to expire?
If you received a defib as part of the defib donation scheme, you may need to check your equipment’s expiration date. Defib batteries are built to last between 2 and 4 years, so now that we are approaching the 4th anniversary of the Christian Eriksen collapse, it may be time to renew your equipment. If you are unsure about the expiration date of your device, our friendly team will be happy to take a call and help you.
The Importance of AED Maintenance
Having a defibrillator on hand can mean the difference between life and death—but only if it’s in full working order. A device that fails to provide a shock, misreads the heart’s rhythm, or delivers an insufficient shock can significantly reduce a person’s chance of survival.
Shockingly, it’s estimated that more than 1 in 3 AEDs in the UK are not working at any given time. Whether due to expired batteries, missing pads, or a lack of regular maintenance, these issues make routine checks vital so that the equipment will perform as expected when it is needed most.
